<p>The flask is of the type in which a culture is cultivated simultaneously on both solid and liq. media. The liq. medium settles in the bottom of the flask while the solid medium coats an interior surface of the flask. A controlled atmos. of vacuum or gas takes up flask space not occupied by media. Improvement is that the flask is provided with a cavity in which solid medium is retained clear of liq. at its max. level but still in the controlled atmos. The cavity is pref. formed in the inner face of a stopper which plugs the neck of a flask. The cavity pref. has projection, e.g. screw threads, which anchor the solid medium in the cavity as it sets from a liq. poured into the cavity. The cavity is pref. on the inner side of a flat, external flange on the stopper, the stopper flange seating onto an annular joint on top of the neck. The stopper pref. has an axial passage sealed with a diaphragm of rubber or similar material which can be pierced by a perfusion needle. Used for cultivation of biological samples, esp. blood samples and samples of cephalo-rachidian liq. for medical analysis. There is no danger of the solid medium being softened by washing action of the liq. The solid medium is clearly visible without interference from liq. or diffraction problems.</p> |
