The container is used for holding soft or cream cheese and has an inner liner (22) in the form of a perforated strainer, liquids draining into a lower space (4). The container tapers inwards from top to bottom. The inner liner has its rim increased in diameter to form an annular band (2) and a shoulder (24). This contacts a corresponding shoulder (13) on the outer cover (12), leaving a gap (41) between the inner and outer sides. A clip-over lid (31) is fitted, its sides (32) tapering inwards towards the top and forming a seal between the lip (25) of the strainer and the underside of the lid.
