The vapours may be produced by introducing raw or partially charred coal into the hot gas. In an illustrated embodiment, the briquettes are passed down a vertical kiln in counter-current to the gas and vapour, temperatures ranging from 900‹ F. at the top of the charge to 1700‹ F. at the bottom. The coke is cooled in a water-jacketed section, and solids and tars separated from the gases leaving the kiln may be incorporated in the briquettes.
