1428183 Electrostatic precipitators; centrifugal separators TISSMETAL LIONEL DUPONT and C EYRAUD 22 May 1973 [26 May 1972] 24281/73 Headings B2J and B2P An electrostatic precipitator comprises an annular gas passage 7 defined by a tubular electrode 2 connected to the negative side of a high voltage supply 5 and surrounded by an earthed collector electrode 1; an inlet 8 for gas or vapour containing dust or liquid particles and an outlet 9 for purified gas, the inlet and outlet being so arranged that the gas follows a helicoidal path through the passage 7 whereby particle separation is partly effected by centrifugal force; nozzles 21 associated with electrode 1 for directing a mist of liquid droplets into the passage 7; nozzles 15 associated with electrode 2 for directing charged droplets towards the electrode 1; discharge points 12 provided on electrode 2 for ionising the gas; and a flange 13 also provided on electrode 2. In use, the dust-laden gas is ionised by discharge from the points 12 on its entry into the passage 7, whereby the dust particles are negatively charged and are attracted to the liquid droplets emerging from nozzles 21; most of the resultant larger particles then move under the centrifugal force to the collector electrode 1 whilst the negatively charged droplets issuing from nozzles 15, with any captured dust particles, also collect on the electrode 1, and the stream thus formed flows out of the precipitator by way of a conduit 25. Some of the large particles, however, are attracted to the electrode 2 to form another stream and this is atomised electrostatically by the points 12 and flange 13 so that it forms a secondary mist in the passage 7 resulting in a greater overall efficiency. The nozzles 15 may be dispensed with (Figs. 3 & 4 not shown), and discharge flanges may replace the points 12 (Figs. 9 & 10, not shown).
