An accelerator for a fluid contg. particles of different weights which have to be sepd. from one another, comprises a helicoidal duct of progressively diminising dia. The duct consists of adjacent coaxial rings with concave inner surfaces. The distance of the surface from the axis diminishes in the direction of the periphery.The first ring has an inlet for a fluid under pressure. Each ring has an inner sloping surface part, in the zone where the inner surface is nearest the axis, so as to direct the fluid into the following ring. The last ring opens into a cylindrical coaxial chamber of a larger dia., fitted with pipes for withdrawing particles entering the chamber. The pipes can be moved along a longitudinal axis.The accelerator can be used for economically and rapidly separating particles from a fluid, and for efficient combustion of a fuel. Applications include sepn. of fresh water from contaminated wateR, sepn. of petroleum components and treatment of waste gases. Problems of large size, complexity and high cost, associated with e.g. distillation and centrifugation, are avoided.
