摘要 <p>1,042,124. Echo-sounding. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 13, 1965 [Jan. 31, 1964], No. 43150/64. Heading H4D. [Also in Division G1] In an echo-recorder for use with hydrographic surveying, oceanographic, navigational, fish-detection, or flaw-detection echo-sounding apparatus in which a recording stylus is moved across the recording medium by an endless belt, the transmission of an acoustic pulse is synchronized with the movement of the stylus by means of two rotary switches which are driven from the belt and whose relative speed of rotation is such that both switches operate simultaneously once in each complete circuit of the belt to trigger the transmitter. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 a belt 23, e.g. a toothed belt or a chain, runs on wheels 22 and 24 and carries the stylus 17 of the recorder (Fig. 1, not shown) which may be of the electrochemical type. The two rotary switches comprise contacts 27, 29 on the wheels 22, 24, which co-act with stationary contacts 28, 30 respectively. The dimensions of the wheels and belt are such that for one circuit of the belt wheel 22 makes 3 complete revolutions and wheel 24 makes 5 complete revolutions, both switches operating simultaneously when the stylus 17 is in the position shown. In order to record from different ranges, the instant of transmission may be advanced or retarded (in relation to the 'position of stylus 17) by moving contact 28 to one of four alternative positions 28a-28d equally spaced round the circumference of wheel 22 (Figs. 2a-2e, not shown), or by selecting a stationary contact at one of these positions by means of a switch 36. For an incremental range adjustment, e.g. to compensate for displacement of the transmitter from a datum level, the angular positions of both stationary contacts 28, 30 may be adjusted continuously between fixed limits (Figs. 4, 5, 6, not shown), the two angular adjustments being ganged together, e.g. by a toothed belt (Fig. 7, not shown), such that the contacts 28, 30 are rotated through angles having the same ratio as the angular speeds of the respective rotary contacts 27, 29. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 8, 9, not shown) the two rotary switches comprise drums 60, 67 having respective conducting strips 61, 68 for bridging pairs of contact arms, one drum 60 being driven directly from the toothed belt and the other drum 67 being driven through gearing from the first drum 60. Instead of mechanical contacts, the rotary switches may employ cams, photoelectric or electromagnetic induction switching systems.</p>
