PURPOSE: To produce cigarettes without confining downward motion of the cigarette in the passage by having the means of protruding a faulty cigarette from its passage equipped with a suction means to give an axial motion to the faulty cigarette. CONSTITUTION: A passage 10 is formed between a sidewall 12 and edge walls 14 and 16, and a probe head 70 monitors cigarettes that descend in the passage 10. When a cigarette reached the position 20 that matches an aperture 22 provided on the edge wall 16, the cigarette is axially projected through the aperture 22. The probe head 70 is positioned so that it can monitor the cigarette at about one cigarette diameter above the position where the faulty cigarette is protruded, radiates light along the axial direction of the cigarette, laterally detects luminous intensity produced to monitor if the filled end of the cigarette is good. When the protrusion of a cigarette 20 is demanded, high-pressure air is fed through a valve 41 to a chamber 32 and low pressure region is generated in a duct 28, and the cigarette 20 is sucked through the aperture 22 and the duct 28.
