Animal feeds are prepd. from forage plant, such as lucerne, sugar beet or their by-products, by lowering their water-content in a process in which the starting material is mixed with 12 wt.% of an aqueous sugar solution containing >=30 wt.% of dry matter and the mixt. is then pressed. The product is storage stable, the stability depending upon the final water content. The process is economical on energy, it allows supplementary extractions of sugar, there is no loss due to combustion in driers, and the forage value can be increased by the incorporation of crushed straw at the same time as the sugar soln. Typically, the aq. sugar soln. is molasses and the prod. is pressed in a cylinder crusher by two successive operations. In an example, 250 tonnes/day sugar beet pulp, contg. 50t dry matter, was mixed with 9t/day molasses in a continuous process. The mixt. was passed to two sugar cane-mills which gave 114t/day of pulp contg. 41.8% dry matter. This product could be passed to a drier to give 55t/dau of pulp containing 47.6t dry matter.
|
