The loads inside the container ship are held at the correct temperature by special air conditioning units (1) set beside the container stacks and coupled to them by recirculating ducts. The units themselves are linked to the outside by a pre-conditioning unit outside the holds. The pre-conditioning units can be made large and enables the system to cope with large fluctuations of outside temperatures, especially when the type of load carried requires some measure of fresh air replenishment. The units ensure that any fresh air drawn in is at a set temperature.
