Dummy starter billet for continuous casting plant - in which dummy is wound onto storage trolley on casting stage

A dummy starter billet is manipulated in a continuous casting plant, where the dummy is stored as a coil above the plant and, prior to casting, is uncoiled and fed through the mould and the billet guide track. The dummy is then picked up and re-coiled ready for re-use. The pref. plant includes a trolley driven along the casting stage and fitted with a motor and pinion driving a ring gear to rotate a wheel. On the periphery of the wheel is a pair of tongs actuated by a work cylinder to hold the head of the starter dummy; and similar tongs are fitted on the wheel for holding the front end and the middle of the dummy. A calbe hoist is pref. used to lift the dummy from the end of the guide track onto the wheel. A simple and compact device; several wheels may be mounted on one trolley and used on a multitrack casting plant.
