The cutting plant for continuously produced cast steel slab has upstream of a transverse cutting unit. Longitudinal cutting units located in transversely offset positions downstream of the transverse units and are brought into use according to demand. Transverse conveyors move the lengths between the cutting units. The longitudinal cutting unit has cutters which act on the hot slab and a reception surface for slab lengths. The transverse conveyor may centre the slab length in an opening in the reception surface which may be tranversed by two cutters. The opening may take the form of a s slot which extends for the length of the longitudinal cutting unit.
