A series wound DC traction is controlled with a reducing field strength above a set speed, a DC setting control being between the supply and the windings. A free running control is set parallel to the pole windings. A free running control is set parallel to the pole windings and a second control parallel to the exciting winding. The controls ensure that there are no sudden current pulses when the mode of control changes to the field modulation mode. A smooth traction torque is ensured over the whole range of control.
