A preformed positive electrode and a preformed negative electrode are each separately wrapped in layers of semi-permeable separator material, the outer layer of at least one of the wraps being a different bibulous sheet material (e.g. woven nylon fabric) acting as a wick. The positives 8 are wrapped by layers 4 and the negatives 10 by layers 6, the layers 4 being pleated so that the electrodes (8 and 10) are in a single stack. The invention is particularly directed to silver/zinc alkaline cells but may be applied, e.g. to silver/cadmium or nickel/ cadmium cells. |
