A gripper-type cable brake has a pair of brakeshoes adapted to grip opposite sides of a cable. Each of these brakeshoes is formed of a nonferrous metal, either aluminum, an aluminum alloy, brass, bronze, or brass or bronze alloyed with aluminum. In the direction of displacement of the brakeshoe relative to the cable there are provided a plurality of spaced apart plugs of a mixture of sintered graphite and bronze which act as a lubricant so as to reduce the coefficient of friction between the brakeshoe and the cable to below 0.15.
|
