The modulator circuit is for a matrix display unit in a television receiver where the amplitude of the information is represented by a pulse code. The coded signals are fed to the modulator circuit via a number of bit signal conductors. The modulator circuit incorporates a counting circuit which acts as a pulse width modulator and a pulse amplitude modulator. The pulse amplitude modulator is controlled by the signal conductors. The modulator circuit contains a gating circuit which functions as a multiplier. The outputs of the pulse width modulator are connected to the inputs of the gating circuit and the output of the gating circuit is connected to the input of the matrix display unit.
