932,795. Handling radio-active material. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. July 5, 1961 [July 19, .1960], No. 25203/60. Class 39 (4). [Also in Groups XXII and XXV] A container for housing a nuclear fuel element comprises a cap 2 and shell 1 which are secured together by means operated by a remote control actuating tool such as is used in a " hot-cell," the container being located in the " hotcell " by means of a cup 10. The cup 10 houses an annular gear 11 in mesh with a spur gear 14 carried by drive shaft 12 by means of which a nut 6 on the cap 2 is rotated, the nut having a part-conical surface 6a engageable with balls 8 retained in a cage 7 supported on the cap. When the shell is lowered into position over the cap, the nut is screwed upwardly to bring the balls into contact with a shoulder 2b on the cap, further upward movement of the nut causing the balls to roll outwardly along the shoulder into contact with an annular recess 9 in the shell. The balls then move along a part-spiral path and since axial movement of the balls is prevented by the shoulder 2b, the shell is drawn downwardly over the cap until the balls reach the locked position shown in Fig. 21.
|
