A novel bale forming machine is provided for picking up cut hay from a field and forming it into a cylindrical bale. The baler includes: portable frame means having a forward end and a rearward end. Upright spaced side walls are mounted on the frame. Drum means are mounted in the frame means proximate the rearward end, such drum means being operable to pick up the hay and for rolling the hay into a cylindrical bale. Roller means are mounted in the frame mean, and are operable to compact the hay into the bale. Flexible means are mounted in the frame means and such flexible means have a free end disposed on the ground, such flexible means extending rearwardly from the roller means to proximate the drum means for coacting with the roller means to compact the hay in the bale. Power means are connected to said drum means to rotate same such that the portion thereof adjacent the ground moves forwardly in the same direction as the machine is moving. This invention thus provides a baler for forming round bales wherein the degree of compaction of the hay in the bale can be varied and which is rugged in construction, economical to manufacture, easily repaired and extremely effective in use. |
