It is proposed, for a cracking tube furnace for the catalytic cracking of gases at high temperature in long, externally heatable tubes (1), to form the catalyst support (6) from thin walls, against which the process gas flows on both sides. Giving said catalyst support a specific shape ensures that, compared to conventional catalyst supports, it has a lower pressure loss and a larger contact area. For said catalyst bodies, a reliable attachment to an inner support tube (5) is proposed. Owing to a screen (8) at the inlet (4) of the process gas, temperature channels are avoided. <IMAGE>
