A large wheel is mounted vertically on a horizontal shaft. It is carried on ball bearings and is free to rotate. It is divided into eight compartments which are equal in size and equally spaced round the circumference of the wheel. Each compartment consists of an inner and an outer section which are joined by a tube. The two sections are displaced circumferentially from each other. The compartments are filled with a liquid. As the liquid is thrown from the outer to the inner section of the compartment it produces a force greater than that necessary to return it to its initial position. This leaves a net force available to provide a turning moment on the wheel.
