The installation consits of a trough (1) with the sludge supply (2) also carrying the flotation reagents. On one side there is a partition (3) terminating at the top with the overflow (4) adjustable in height. At the bottom of the partition there is an opening (5) for the discharge of the residual matter. Both the overflow and the opening (5) open into a chamber (6) through which the floating foamy substance, as well as the residue matter are emptied to the outside. At the bottom of the trough the gaseous medium is supplied through a pipe (13) connected to a distribution header (12) carrying several hollow rubber elements (1) forming a coherent mat. Each element is fitted with a number of small orifices which open up under gas pressure and admit the gaseous medium into the sludge, but close up when the gas pressure drops preventing ingress of sludge into the mat.
