Label marking unit esp. for bottles or cans perforates the paper label with e.g. the date as it passes on a transporter to the label application station. Elastic surfaces (8) are provided in the rotating label transport element (1a) synchronously with which rotates a carrier body (4) bearing several needles (6a) positioned so that they strike the label over the elastic surfaces. The needles (6a) are made from hardened stainless steel with blunt tips and are positioned releasably in clusters to form the required symbol arrangement. The wires can be simply removed and rearranged when the data to be recorded changes.
