In the process, a plastic material (50) mixed with reinforcing fibre shreds or flaky reinforcing particles is applied in the flowable state to the cleaned interior wall of the steel tank. The essentially non-shrinking plastic material, after curing, forms together with the steel wall a wall of composite material. It is thereby possible in a cost-saving manner to produce a renovated steel tank which has a higher strength than hitherto and in which rusting on the interior surface of the steel wall is prevented. Before and during the application, the relative air humidity in the tank (2) is reduced and kept low by means of a device (4). The plastic material mixed with the reinforcing particles is conveyed from a storage and pressure conveying device (8) to the application apparatus (10). A propellent-air device (12) serves for generating heated propellent air. <IMAGE>
