Flowing gases are purified by filter bags (3) having a fabric-like wall, by passing the gas to be purified through them and the solid particles being taken up during this. A compressed air feed (13) having a controllable solenoid valve (C, E) is assigned to each of the filter bags. In at least two pulses, separated from each other by a pause interval, as cleaning times, compressed air is introduced into the filter bag (3) and the fabric-like wall is agitated at least during the cleaning times. During the first pulse, the partially encrusted solid particle coating is loosened, it rests during the pause interval and is dislodged by the following pulse. <IMAGE>
