Detergent tablets are improved by being heated in less than 8 seconds to a surface temperature of above 850 DEG F. using dry heat, i.e. any source of heat other than steam, e.g. infra-red lamps, quartz lamps, gas flames or hot air. Before being so heated the surfaces of the tablets may be contacted with 0.04-0.2% water, based by weight on the whole tablet weight. They may also be preheated to above 850 DEG F. using dry heat before being contacted with water and finally reheated under the above conditions. The tablets are of conventional formulation, lists of suitable components being given. A typical tablet which is heated to 1500 DEG F. in a flash heater after being contacted with a minor amount of water, comprises sodium sulphate, sodium tripolyphosphate, pentadecylbenzene sulphonate, sodium silicate, water, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, and other unnamed conventional additives.
|
