An afterburner system is for automatic ignition equipment which can be controlled by a contact breaker or a contactless transmitter. The afterburner voltage lags behind the h.v. ignition pulse. The latter has a very short rise time. The system incorporates a transformer (5) which is supplied by an alternating voltage from a generator (6) to produce the afterburner voltage. The input circuit of the transformer incorporates a control module (9) which affects the duration of the afterburner voltage. The latter is derived from a rectifier (7). The ignition pulse is synchronised via a switch.
