Allyl acetate is prepared by contacting propylene with a palladium salt in the presence of acetic acid; the acetate of an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal or copper; molecular oxygen; a copper salt; and an organic polar compound which is an amide, a nitrile, a sulphoxide, a sulphone, or a diketone; either under anhydrous conditions or in the presence of not more than 20% of water, and either in the absence of halide ions or in presence of not more than 0.40 molar halide ions, the concentration of acetate being at least 0.10 molar. Palladous acetate, nitrate, chloride or bromide may be used and the copper salt may be cupric acetate, nitrate or chloride. The polar compounds mentioned are acetamide, N-methylacetamide, N,N-dimethylacetamide, N,N-dimethylformamide, benzamide, and pyrrolidine; acetonitrile, propiononitrile, benzonitrile, succinonitrile, phthalonitrile, terephthalonitrile and adiponitrile; dimethyl sulphoxide and cyclic tetramethylene sulphoxide; dimethyl sulphone and cyclic tetramethylene sulphone; and acetylacetone. In examples for the preparation of allyl acetate, isopropenyl and n-propenyl acetate and acetone are prepared as by-products. |
