New diphenyl ether derivs. are of formula (I) where R1 is F, Cl, Br or Cf3; Y is COOH, COOR2, CH2OH or CH2OAc; R2 is not >8C alkyl or aryl; and Ac is 1-8C acyl) and their salts. Specific (I) include 3-(4-(4-chlorophenoxy)phenyl)-methacrylic acid. In an example, this is prepd. by boiling 3-(4-(4-chlorophenoxy)phenyl)methacrylonitrile with EtOH, water and KOH. (I) have thrombocyte aggregation inhibiting activity, and also show fibrinolytic, and cholesterol- and triglyceride-lowering properties. (I) are also useful as intermediates for other pharmaceuticals.
