1490606 Terpene resins OULU OSAKEYHTIO 7 Nov 1975 [11 Nov 1974 (2)] 46201/75 Heading C3P A process for manufacturing hard terpene resins by thermally isomerizing technicalα- pinene of over 90% purity by weight in the vapour phase and by polymerizing the isomerate in a solvent in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst is characterized in that such technicalα-pinene is continuously isomerized thermally in the vapour phase at 340-500‹ C. using such a combination of feed rate and reactor dimensions that an isomerate containing less than 10% by weightα-pinene and less than 50% by weight allo-ocimene is obtained and the isomerate is thereafter polymerized as such. Theα-pinene may be isomerized at 400-500‹ C. so as to produce an isomerate containing less than 5% by weightα-pinene and less than 10% by weight allo-ocimene, and the isomerisate is thereafter polymerized at -20‹ to 50‹ C. Alternatively theα-pinene is isomerized at 340-450‹ C. so as to obtain an isomerisate which contains 10-50% by weight allo-ocimene and the isomerisate is thereafter polymerized as such in two stages, the temperature in the first stage being -30‹ to -20‹ C. and in the second stage 20-40‹ C. In the specific examples the technicalα-pinene used contains by weight 95%α-pinene, 2% #-pinene, 2% carene and 1% camphene. Compositions of specific isomerisates containingα-pinene, allo-ocimene, cracking products and polymerizable cyclic hydrocarbons are specified. The polymerization may be carried out using as a catalyst aluminium chloride in an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent. |
