A workpiece for forging or stamping is automatically positioned for the operation by an intermediate clamping arm which can be controlled to provide flexible or rigid retention of the part. A workpiece (2) to be worked on is automatically positioned by an arm (1) such that the working area (2a) is subjected to action from a forging hammer (4). The workpiece is held by a clamp (5) the grip of which is controlled by a piston (7) and shaft (6) moving in a cylindrical tube (8). This jack is controlled by compressed air (9). Movement of the clamp arm is blocked by compressed air (16) entering a chamber (15) around the arm and sealed by a membrane (14).
