<p>A process for the prepn. of organic peroxides of formula (I):- (where Ar is an aromatic radical; R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radica and X is an aliphatic, aromatic or hydroaromatic radical) from dicarbinals and hydroperoxides or from carbinals and dihydroperoxides in the presence of water, comprises using aq. dil. mineral acids as catalysts for the condensn. Specified catalysts are HCl and HNO3. The peroxides are used for crosslinking plastics esp. polyethyleno. The process has the advantage of an aq. reaction using readily available acids which are inoffensive compared with perchloric acid previously proposed.</p> |
