The entrance of the melt 3 into the chamber 102 may be delayed by inserting plugs (39) (40) Fig. 3 (not shown), which melt or are destroyed after coming into contact with the melt 3 or by covering the passages with a removable refractory cover member (48) Fig. 4 (not shown), which is raised when the metal is required to react with the substance (51).
