Granules of alumina are formed by calcining high purity alumina at 1250 DEG C., wet grinding it, removing particles of less than 10 microns by decantation in water, drying them, pulverizing them, forming the pulverized particles into a slip with water and a few drops of HCl, and passing the slip through nozzles to form drops which fall on to a porous support, where the drops are dried to form the granules. The granules may be subsequently baked in alumina crucibles at 1750 DEG C. to form non-porous granules or at a lower temperature to form porous granules. |
