An indicator element consists of a selectable electrode, the control electrode positioned opposite it and the fluid crystal situated between the two electrodes. A crystal oscillator, a frequency divider connected to it and a counter are also provided. One of the two driver circuits (8, 23) is connected to the counter (4, 5) via decoders (6, 7) and supplies signals to the selectable electrodes. The other driver circuit is coupled to the frequency divider and supplies output signals to the control electrodes. The pulse chains fed to the control electrodes have different phases from those of the pulse chains fed to the selectable electrodes.
