A telephone dial has a centrifugal governor supported by a large surface of a plastic plate member. The governor comprises a shaft (6) bearing a drive gear wheel (12) together with braking weights (11) and nipples (3) which cooperate with a brake cup (4). On the inside of the brake cup is a metallic layer (10) having a braking surface (9). The base of the brake cup is in the form of a ring around the circumference of which are retaining claws (14) which permit the dial to be inserted, but which inhibit its rotation. The brake cup (4) is supported by a hollow stud (15) on which the governor is positioned in relation to the braking surface (9) so that, in the event of malfunction, noisy operation does not result.
