The object is to convert thermal energy into mechanical motion by using the heat to change the permeability of the active magnetic material of a machine. Such a machine comprises a salient pole rotor (3) inside a salient pole stator contained in a yoke (2). The air gap space, apart from a small running clearance, is occupied by a series of chambers (8) whose radial sides (5) are of magnetic material. The circumferential sides (14) of the chambers are made of non-magnetic and heat insulating material. The chamber assembly is stationary and attached to the stator. The permeability of the radial plates (5) is changed by admitting heating and cooling fluid into the chambers (8) in a set sequence. This gives paths of unequal magnetic reluctance round the air gap and motion results. Typically the rotor poles (1) are of permanent magnet material, and the stator poles of ferromagnetic material.
|
