The mechanism serves for rescuing persons from burning buildings. The mechanism consists of a rope drum on which the necessary length of fire resistant rope is collided. One end is fixed to the drum and the other leaves the mechanism over a diverting roller and outlet tube to be attached to some overhanging part of the building at the top floor. Inside the drum the two shoes of a drum brake mechanism are operation pressed against the inner drum surface by spring. The lower part of the baseplate has an eyelet into which a suitable harness carrying the person is hooked. The speed at which the lowering of the person takes place is adjusted by changing the angular position of the spring assembly inside the drum.
