The cutting mechanism for a mower has a support for belt deflection pulleys, one of which is driven while the other can be moved under the action of a spring. There is an endless non-metal belt fitted with cutting blades which runs over the pulleys. The support (22) for the two pulleys (25, 29) is releasably connected with the mobile mower (10) which carries the drive (11) for the belt (32). The belt is a wedge belt (32) made up of individual overlapping elements connected by metal rivets. The cutting blades sit on foot plates which are inserted between two belt elements and are anchored at two adjacent metal rivets which connect the belt elements.
