A device multiplying numbers exploits the advantageous characteristics of binary number systems. Powers of two, e.g. 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 etc., and their squares are stored as constants which are accessible by control pulses. The arithmetic unit contains a cylindrical device which has a series of at least twelve consecutive terms for powers of two and twelve consecutive terms for their squares stored as fixed decimal constants. The highest common power of two is multiplied by the difference between the first multiplicand and itself and the product stored. The first product is then added to the product of the first multiplicand and the difference between the second multiplicand and the highest common power and to the square of the highest common power.
|
