The connection between a pipe (5) and a container (1) includes an O-ring (7) placed between a flange (9) on the pipe and a flange on the container. The pipe is secured by a screw thread whereby axial pressure is applied to the O-ring. The flange on the container is flat. The confronting surface (9a) of the flange of the pipe is shaped to be radially outwardly divergent from the container flange. This enables the O-ring to expand to an axially wider spacing between the two flanges in case of overtightening of the screw.
