To prevent infection being transferred from one patient to another, a dental drill is used with a disinfecting device. In one form, the supply cable (1) for the drill passes through a holder (10) to the other face of which is attached a porous pad (4) saturated with disinfectant. The pad can be retained between two half shells (6, 7) which can be two arms held against the cable by a spring around a hinge pin passing through them at one side. The two halves can be adjusted by a thumb screw each side. Alternative designs have porous pads which enclose the handle or the whole drill, while the drill is not being used.
