The metal objects, e.g. pipelines or tanks, are cathodically protected against corrosion, and measurements are made using a reference electrode. The device has a closed container (1) with non-conducting walls, with a part of one wall consisting of a metal plate (2) insulated on the inside. A reference electrode (5) inside the container is surrounded with an electrolyte solution (3) connected to the metal plate (2) outer surface by a connection (4) passing insulated through the plate (2). A cable (6, 7) leads from the metal plate (2) and the reference electrode (5) to the voltage measuring instrument, and a cable (8) from the metal plate (2) to the cathodically protected metal object.
