The aim of the process is to improve the flame-retardant properties of particle boards. The latter are produced by pressing board blanks containing at least one layer of wood particles containing a heat-curing binder and boric acid. The sought-after improvement results from the fact that, before pressing, in addition to binder and boric acid, at least one halide of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal is added to the particles. Sodium chloride is especially suitable as additive.
