In the cleaning of foundry sand the coated grains of sands which are to be cleaned are transported in a main gas stream in which the grains are in suspension onto a screen so that the grains are subjected to a mechanical shook producing a splitting of the gaugue in which the grains are coated from the sand grains. The gangue fragments and the grains are then physically sepd. and the mass of the grains are then directed towards at least one sec. gaseous stream traversing the mass so as to obtain another physical separation of the residual gangue fragments from the sand grains.
