The hot vermiculite arriving from a flame zone is impregnated in an impregnation zone by inorganic or organic materials, after which the impregnated vermiculite is dried out in a drying zone and optionally hardened. A combination furnace intended for carrying out the process contains an exfoliation furnace (4), an impregnation furnace (12) and a drying furnace (14) which are connected together. The impregnation furnace (12) is provided with spraying jets (11) and an immersion bath (6) into which impregnation solution is fed. In the drying furnace (14), the impregnated vermiculite is dried out by hot exhaust gases from the exfoliation furnace (4); the vermiculite intended for building material is then further hardened by the hot exhaust gases which are enriched with CO2. The process can be used for producing an animal feedstuff or a soil regenerating agent.
