The floor mounted stepping switch is preferably intended for securing dangerous zones round diagnostic X-ray appts. It uses a tread plate (16) which covers the floor surface to be secured. The plate is resiliently held by springs (17) over a mounting plate (18) resting on the floor. The edge region of the tread plate contains contact sets (21) actuatable by the relative movement of the two plates. Preferably strips (19, 20) are mounted under the tread plate and provide its support when under load. The contact sets may be provided at the tread plate corners, if the plate is of angular shape. Their actuation may be carried out by distance changes, or by relative parallel sliding motion of the two plates. The load on the tread plate typically opens the contacts.
