<p>A laminate comprising a lamina of a polymer of an alkene-1 having not more than 8 carbon atoms per molecule and an adjacent lamina of a hydrogenated block copolymer having prior to hydrogenation the general formula A-B-A where A is a non-elastomeric polyvinylarene, polyvinyl heterocyclic or a cyclised polymer block of a hydrocarbyl substituted conjugated diene, having a molecular weight in the range 4,000 to 115,000 and B is an elastomeric polymer block of a conjugated diene having a molecular weight in the range 20,000 to 450,000, the unsaturation not exceeding 50% of the unsaturation of the unhydrogenated polymer is made by applying a latex or cement of the hydrogenated copolymer to the polyalkene and removing the vehicle. Specified polyalkenes are the homo- and copolymers of ethylene and propylene, which may be admixed with other hydrocarbon polymers e.g. hydrogenated polymers of styrene, isoprene or butatiene. Specified block co-polymers are those where B is polyisoprene and the end blocks are homo-or co-polymers of styrene, methyl-styrene, vinyl xylene, ethyl vinyl xylene, stilbene, vinyl cyclobutene, vinyl cyclopentene or vinyl naphthalene. Fillers e.g. carbon black, titanium dioxide or asbestos fibres may be incorporated in either layer. The example discloses the application of a solution in toluene of a polystyrenepolyisoprenepolystyrene copolymer to polypropylene, the toluene being evaporated and the resultant layers bonded under heat and pressure.</p> |
