1,063,310. Reactors. HITACHI Ltd.- Dec. 23, 1963 [Dec. 27, 1962], No. 50791/63. Heading G6C. A reactor core comprises a plurality of separate regions, such as a fast fission region and a thermal fission region, each part being installed in effect in. a separate pressure vessel. A first embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown), comprises a cylindrical pressure vessel containing a fast fission region surrounded by a coaxial annular pressure vessel containing a thermal fission region. In the second embodiment (Fig. 2), the two pressure vessels 7, 8 are integral and are of circular and annular cross-section respectively. The inner fast fission core region 5 includes top and bottom reflectors 13 and control plates 9. The outer thermal fission region contains cruciform section control rods 10. Coolant circulation.-Water enters at 14, is boiled in the thermal fission region, and leaves via 15 to a steam separator. Saturated steam from the separator enters the reactor at 16 passes upwards through ducts 11 and downwards through the fast fission region -5, where it is superheated, and leaves via outlet 17 for delivery to a turbine. The water acts as moderator in the thermal fission region.
