In mfr. of polymeric hydrophilic fibres by dry spinning a soln. contg. besides the solvent, a non-solvent for the polymer which is miscible with the solvent, the soln. contains 2-25 wt. % (w.r.t. the total mixt.) water and the mixt. is heated to at least a temp. corresponding to the formation of a clear soln. The soln. is then spun at a temp. greater than the gel point of the soln. Microporous fibres are obtd. with a core/sheath structure and a water absorption capacity of >10%.
