The display device, is partic. for a typographic unit, a printer or typewriter etc., and uses electronic components giving it operational flexibility and making it less troublesome to operate and simpler to mfr. than the equivalent mechanical or electromechanical devices. It has a point matrix alphanumeric character display, a source of a first group of coded signals representing the alphanumeric characters, and a display control device. Signals of the first group are converted into signals of a second group corresp. to a predefined width of display per character. The second group of signals are used to control the width of characters and the spacing between them.
