Plain C steel of deep drawing quality contg. 0.1% C and of high purity oxides, is produced in sheet, strip or tube form by powder metallurgy in which a non-alloyed steel powder having a high C content 0.2-1.0 wt.% is compacted in known manner to porous strip or bar having a pore volume of >=5% by rolling or pressing. The semi-prod. is annealed for a brief period in a protective gas atmos. at 500-1300 degrees C and then spaced to give the final prod. of high density. Method eliminates the formation of solid deoxidation and spinel -type oxide skins.
